Archaeological Museum of Elis

The Museum of Ancient Elis was constructed during the period 2002-2004 on the SE edge of the ancient city, on the slopes of the hill of the acropolis, in an area where previous excavations of the subsoil had shown that there were no antiquities. The museum combines an elegant exterior architecture that is in perfect harmony with the natural environment with a functional and spacious interior.

It has a control room with monitors that allow continuous monitoring of the museum’s key points, a large reception room and an exhibition area, which includes four rooms and a corridor. There is also an internal partially enclosed courtyard which houses some of the other sculptures, as well as the mosaic floor with the labours of Hercules and the symbols of the Muses.

In the basement there are six large storerooms that house all the objects that have been found during systematic and rescue excavations, as well as collections within the ancient city and within a radius of several kilometres around it. Special rooms in the basement house the air conditioning and electricity generator facilities.
